The Village Comics Rack: DMZ Vol. 1: On The Ground TPB Review

The American Civil War is a source of constant fascination across all forms of media. There is no shortage of romance, drama, or action from the period. Historians will tell you that has a lot to do with the notion of brother against brother or that we should remember it so that we don’t repeat it. All you have to do is watch the news to see that repeating it is not too far out a concept. Thats why Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli’s DMZ works. Continue reading

J. Michael Straczynski’s run on The Amazing Spider-Man was a long, and controversial one. His tenure held as many acclaimed elements as it did bones of contention for fans including Aunt May discovering Peter Parker was Spider-Man, a mystical slant put on the title character’s power set, the revelation that his long dead love had fathered a set of twins with his greatest enemy, and finally the story arc titled One More Day.

The Village Library: ‘Angel Time’ by Anne Rice review by Strider

When Anne Rice first announced she was done with the world of her witches and vampires she had created decades ago many of her fans were disheartened. Where, oh where, they wondered, would they go for modern vampire fiction. Stephanie Meyer and Charlaine Harris answered that call with unmitigated literary disasters (the former) and some very good (the latter) entries into the genre. Continue reading

Welcome back True Believers! I’m coming back to you with my reviews for last week’s comic book releases. Last week was a much lighter load than my first week’s metric ton of periodicals, but I still have a swell bunch of comic-booky goodness to pass your way; mostly great stuff but there is a stinker or two mixed in the bunch. We have a couple of new series popping up this week in addition to our regular purchases and any week when I can buy an issue of my current favorite ongoing series is a good one so let me start off with that book. In the immortal words of the late, great Dr. Nick Riviera, “Hi, everybody”!!! Welcome to my first round of comic book reviews. I’ve been buying up comics since I first learned to read with books like Transformers and G.I. Joe that I would buy at the Circle K down the street. These days I read all kinds of comics from super-heroes, to crime noir, to dramatic non-fiction so hopefully I can help you find the right comic to spend your hard earned, recession laced cash on. Comics Catch-Up – A Comprehensive Guide to The Blackest Night (Part 1) by Flash

October 9, 2009, filed under Comics.
Tags: ,
The Blackest Night is DC Comics latest company-wide event or crossover and it’s a damn fine piece of storytelling featuring super-powered zombies (and we all know how much I love zombies), but – as is the case with most comic book stories – it may throw off the casual fan with heavy doses of comics’ continuity and history. The books stand up fine all by their lonesome but you get a much deeper appreciation for the material being presented and a much better understanding for what exactly is going on if you have the back-story to go with it. It’s like watching the upcoming sixth season of LOST without having ever watched a prior episode – sure, you’re still watching what is probably the best show on television, but chances are you’re going to be pretty lost yourself a lot of the time. Lucky you, I’m here to free you of the burden of having to read hundreds of issues of comics. I’ll be running down the major points (with a ton of bonus nuances sprinkled about) that you will need to really get the most out of The Blackest Night. This is going to be a long one so I split it, you’ll find part 2 posted tomorrow so go get a sammich and a Coke and enjoy. Continue reading

The Awesome Zombie: “5 Entertaining Ways To Prepare For The Zombie Apocalypse” by Flash

October 3, 2009, filed under Comics, DVD, Games, Movies.

Do you love zombies? Stop. It was a rhetorical question, of course you love zombies, the adorable little scamps. They get a bad rap because of the whole “undead abomination furiously eating the flesh of the living” thing, but I can’t fault them for that, I mean, they gotta eat something right? And let’s get one thing straight, right off the bat: the zombie apocalypse WILL happen, I couldn’t tell you when or how, but keep an eye on the old lady living across the street, I’ve seen her shambling around the neighborhood eying the playing children like they were a $40 filet minion and moaning all the while. It could just be the Alzheimer’s but you better keep your distance to be safe. This weekend’s release of the new movie (or should I say instructional video) Zombieland starring the ever-flowing cup of awesome that is Woody Harrelson, is the latest media attempt to keep us informed and educated on how to care for (or mercilessly slaughter) our zombie brothers, but it isn’t the first of its kind and certainly won’t be the last. Here I present the 5 best ways to prepare for the zombie apocalypse. This list spans all popular media including movies, video games, and comics to best ensure that this important information gets out to those who need it. Continue reading

To the average Spider-Man fan who knows the character from the movies and classic cartoons know that Peter Parker is one unlucky dude. DVD Watch — “The Spectacular Spider-Man” Season 1

I can remember leaving the theater after Spider-Man 3 and thinking I’d never seen a depiction of a character start off so right and veer so terribly in the wrong direction. At the core, Spider-Man shouldn’t be a hard character to wrap one’s gray matter around and, much to my surprise and delight, a cartoon has once again come around to show people how it should be done.
