The Other Guys Review by Krycek

When it comes to certain actors, the old saying of “sometimes less is more” can absolutely be true.  In the case of former SNL funnyman Will Ferrell, it is often the case that he succeeds in being much funnier with small bit parts as opposed to being the center of attention.  However, sometimes all you need is the right person to pair up with and with the right material, magic can happen.  With the release of the latest Will Ferrell comedy The Other Guys, teaming Ferrell up with Oscar Nominee Mark Wahlberg may have been a match made in comedy heaven. Charlie St. Cloud Review by Krycek

In Hollywood, perception is everything.  If audiences expect you to behave a certain way, and you do…chances are you’re going to please a lot of people.  Unfortunately, this is also a double-edged sword, as many times people start to get tired of seeing the same actors playing the same parts.  The trick is to slowly venture out into different territory while not making moves that are extremely drastic.  In the case of teen heartthrob Zac Efron, he has actually shown a lot of wise decision making in his career attempting to evolve from that kid on High School Musical.  However, his latest venture into drama Charlie St. Cloud, while a move in the right direction career wise, isn’t anything that absolutely had to be seen in a theater to be enjoyed. When it comes to action flicks, it’s pretty much a clubhouse with a sign that says “no girls allowed.”  However, there have been quite a few notable exceptions in the all guy group of action heroes.  In fact, one of the biggest action stars to grace the screen lately has been Angelina Jolie.  With a number of hits such as Wanted and the Tomb Raider series under her belt, Angelina has proven to be one of the few remaining bankable action stars.  Well, with the release of the latest action film Salt, Angelina is bigger than ever, and she can rightfully stand toe to toe with any tough-guy action star on the planet, as she kicks all sorts of ass here. Inception Review by Carlsberg

In the past few months, I have voiced two complaints that I now must retract, and for one of which I must also apologize. The first of these complaints was that the movies being released this summer, with the exception of a few shiny gems, pretty much suck. They’re not all awful, but this summer just hasn’t lived up to the summer movie hype. Secondly, I was one of those people who, while I did not object to Inception being made, I just felt like, “Come on, Christopher Nolan. We don’t need this other stuff. We need more Batman and we need it now!” Well here it is. I’m sorry Christopher Nolan. When I saw your name linked with Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, and Michael Caine, I probably should have realized that you were working on your masterpiece. I am sorry I ever doubted you. It won’t happen again. Continue reading

Mostly, when you’re dealing with movies that are classified as “family films” you’re going to find material that is aimed at small children.  With recent hits such as Alvin & The Chipmunks, it has been proven that if a movie can keep children quiet and entertained for a period of time, parents will shell out big bucks and sit through just about anything.  This being said, it is something very cool when a movie is released that is perfectly suitable for kids and adults alike.  Disney’s latest adventure flick The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a welcome addition to fun and family friendly movies everywhere. Recently, there has been quite a nostalgic trend in movie theaters everywhere.  In the past few years, we’ve seen new looks at icons of the past such as Die Hard, Indiana Jones, and Rambo.  These movies are often met with a certain amount of anticipation as fans of the various series always have such fond memories related to them.  Well, the latest action hit of the 80s to get a new millennium makeover is 1987’s classic Predator, and although that film had a number of follow-ups, Predators is the movie that fans of the original have been waiting for. Despicable Me Review by Carlsberg

I think we can all agree that this summer’s movie selection has been a disappointment at best. As far as the animated summer films go, we’ve had a bit of a split decision. Shrek Forever After, the fourth installment of a once great series didn’t critically bomb as badly as its most-recent predecessor, but the consensus was that it just isn’t very good. On the other hand, the second animated feature of the summer was Toy Story 3, a great final installment of the series, a great overall film, and in my opinion, the best film 2010 has given us to date.
So when it came to the third animated film of this mostly dismal summer, Despicable Me, I wasn’t holding my breath for greatness. However, on a scale ranging from Shrek Forever After to Toy Story 3, I’m happy to say that it fell closer to the Toy Story 3 end of the spectrum. Continue reading

When you hear girls talking about being on Team Jacob or Team Edward and Cougars everywhere begin talking about Taylor Lautner’s abs it can only mean that it’s time for another film in …drumrole…the Twilight Saga. It’s hard to believe that it was only two years ago that we were all blessed with the unique experience of Twilight. In case you are late to the party let me get you up to speed on this giant helping of crap that is the equivalent of a Judy Blume book with sparkling vampires and teenage werewolves that don’t like to wear shirts. In Twilight we meet Bella, a depressed teenager (wow, it’s already so original) she meets a very pale guy called Edward. Ahhhhhh. Well first she hates him then he saves her life and then she loves him with every fiber of her being. Ahhhhhhh. Continue reading

The Last Airbender Review by Krycek

07/03/2010, filed under Movies, Reviews.

In 1999, one of the biggest and most surprising hits to be released all summer was the groundbreaking thriller The Sixth Sense.  That film, which featured one of the most famous twist endings of all time, introduced audiences everywhere to an up-and-coming young director named M. Night Shyamalan.  After the massive success of The Sixth Sense, many people thought that Shyamalan was in line to be the next Steven Spielberg, but others remained skeptical of his talent.  After a few respectable films, Shyamalan seemed to loose his way and the results were some of the biggest disappointments of the past few years.  Well, Shyamalan has attempted to break out of his funk and venture into the world of both children’s films and epic moviemaking with his live-action adaptation of the popular cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender.  Well, unfortunately for the legions of fans awaiting it’s release, The Last Airbender is one of the biggest busts to hit theaters all year. Shrek Forever After Review by Puddy

In 2001, when Shrek came out it was one of the most original and funniest animated films to arrive in years. While Shrek 2 and Shrek The Third were not nearly as good or funny, they both made tons of money at the box office and now we get Shrek Forever After. Sadly the Shrek franchise ends with much less of a bang than it arrived with. What made Shrek so cool was that even though it was an animated film, the movie became entrenched into Pop Culture and it felt like everyone went to see this movie. Now as the series concludes it feels all the imagination and inventiveness that was here in 2001 has been replaced with a by the numbers kids movie that fails to inspire. Continue reading

Knight and Day Review by Krycek

When you’re dealing with movies that are released around the summer season, more often than not, you’re not going to find many surprises plot wise.  While an awesome plot can make a movie a lot of fun to try and figure out, certain formulaic plots can work to the extent that you end up having fun when they’re well made.  The main point of weather these movies with known formulas work or not have to deal with weather or not the cast can pull off making a plot that has been used before seem fresh.  With the release of the latest action film Knight and Day, great chemistry between stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz makes what could have been a very used and predictable movie, one of the more enjoyable times I’ve had this summer. Jonah Hex Review by Krycek

If I’m being honest about the theatrical releases so far this summer, there is much to be desired.  Sure, every summer is going to have a few dogs, but this summer just seems to be filled with disappointment after disappointment.  I, for one, was actually pleased with a few fun action flicks, and Toy Story 3 was awesome but for the most part summer 2010 just isn’t working well.  As disappointing as the majority of releases have been, there really hasn’t been a movie released where everything absolutely went wrong.  As disappointing as most releases have been, there’s always something positive to say about them…right?  Well, here it is, villagers, quite possibly the worst movie to come out in recent memory, and it’s called Jonah Hex. Fifteen years ago, Pixar and Disney came together to make the very first full length computer animated film. Toy Story was an instant classic and since then Pixar and Disney have been the benchmark when it comes to animation. Toy Story 2 came out in 1999 and was just as impressive as the original and some would say it may have been better. So needless to say the hype and expectations on Toy Story 3 have been through the roof. I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that not only did Disney and Pixar live up to the hype, they far surpassed it and in the process have created one of the funniest, most touching and best movies of this or any year. The A-Team Review by Krycek

When the summer movie season comes around, audiences everywhere come to have an unwritten agreement with the movies they tend to go to see. One our side, we agree to turn off our brains and not look too hard at plot points and character development. On the filmmaker’s side, they are supposed to agree to present us with some fun entertainment that will make us smile while getting out of the heat. I have to say, for the most part, that in this summer of 2010, the filmmakers aren’t fulfilling their side of the deal. Sure, there have been 2 or 3 movies that were fun, but for the most part this year just sucks. With this in mind, there is finally a movie playing at theaters everywhere where the filmmakers truly respect the pact of summer moviegoers and give everyone a fun ride from beginning to end. What else can I say? The A-Team rocks! Continue reading

There are certain characters that work out so well in certain projects, people just want to see more of them.  When this happens, movie and television writers sometimes decide to present a spin-off movie to give these scene-stealers a shot at the big time.  While this is more popular with television projects than movies, we have seen both good and bad results on both fronts.  Well, this week audiences everywhere were given a gift of one of the best spin-off movies ever with the release of the hilarious film Get Him to the Greek. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Review by Krycek

When going into certain movies, you really need to tae a step back and notice just where the story has come from. I remember back in 2003 when I ventured out to see a little movie based on a theme park ride, I had no idea that I was about to see one of the coolest adventure movies ever created in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. However, when you initially see that the movie you’re headed to is based on a video game, this draws some concern. Video game movies don’t exactly have the greatest reputation when it comes to movie adaptations, to put it lightly. So, with very little expectations I walked into the movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and I have to say, I think I had more fun watching this movie than any summer release so far. MacGruber Review by Puddy

Saturday Night Live has given us many films based on characters created on the show. Some have led to fantastic films (Wayne’s World, Blues Brothers) while others have been a complete disaster (It’s Pat, Stuart saves his Family). Now SNL has brought to the big screen the character, MacGruber and thankfully this film delivers true comedy magic. Last year we were all treated to the comedy masterpiece, The Hangover and in that film we saw a great comedy with flawless timing and delivery of every joke and hilarious moment. MacGruber isn’t on this level, but the film does take advantage of the talent of Will Forte (SNL) and Kristen Wiig (SNL). Along with a funny and talented cast, MacGruber actually has some hilarious action scenes that work very well in the movie. Continue reading

Robin Hood Review by Krycek

Ten years ago, acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) set out to reinvent the classic “sword and sandals” picture with a high concept film titled Gladiator. When it came to casting the lead of the Roman general turned slave, Scott took quite a risk on talented Australian actor Russell Crowe, and the results were something very special. Not only was Gladiator a huge success, it also was awarded best picture and best actor Oscars that year. In the wake of the success of Gladiator, a partnership was forged between Scott and Crowe that has given audiences everywhere some high quality films. Well, in the latest collaboration between Crowe and Scott, they’ve gone back to the formula that worked so well the first time and set their sights on reinventing the bow-and-arrow flick in the new motion picture Robin Hood. While nowhere near as great as Gladiator, this film offers a lot of good aspects and is a perfectly acceptable summer movie. Continue reading

A Nightmare on Elm Street Review by Krycek

Over the past few years, Hollywood has been attempting to recapture some of the magic that has been created in some of the classic horror films of a generation. Recently, we’ve seen updated versions of both Friday the 13th and Halloween, with various successes. However, the deranged killers in both of those films were masked boogiemen, so recreating the central character was more-or-less finding the right mask. With the recent release of the new version of A Nightmare on Elm Street, not only did the creators have to craft an updated version of the classic story, but also they had to search for the right person to replace Freddy Krueger. As far as the remakes of the classic three horror movies go, Freddy has triumphed over both Jason and Michael Myers in a huge way. Continue reading

In Hollywood, there are certain films that were just born to be remade. Hot Tub Time Machine Review by Carlsberg

Let me just start by saying that when you go into a movie entitled “Hot Tub Time Machine”, there are certain elements of filmmaking that you should be expecting to see and some that you definitely shouldn’t. You should know right off the bat that the film is going to be silly, and probably not very scientifically sound. Having this in mind when I went into this film, I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised. This movie is very funny.
The story is pretty basic. Three best friends who have lost touch over the years, Adam, Nick, and Lou, and Adam’s no-direction-in-life nephew, Jacob, go to a ski resort where the three friends had some of their best memories together… Continue reading

So, it is very interesting when a star, who’s mostly known for a certain franchise, decides to branch out and try something new. It’s not an impossible feat, as Daniel Craig has stepped out of James Bond’s shoes, Christian Bale has had success away from Batman, and Matt Damon really isn’t universally known as Jason Bourne. Well, this time brooding and bothered Robert Pattinson has decided to move away from his Twilight role and venture out into the world of drama. As I am not a Twilight fan, I have to say, this movie wasn’t all that bad, but it contains one of the worst endings in the history of film that will forever be associated with what could have been a perfectly adequate little romantic drama. “She’s Out of My League” Review by Carlsberg

Comedies these days come a dime a dozen. There is usually nothing new involved in plotlines and the crude humor that was once funny for its shock value, is often lost on audiences who go in to movies now expecting it. However, every once in a while audiences will be surprised by a film they weren’t expecting much from, but which turns out to be an exception to the norm and actually has a lot of heart and a comedic distinction from the hundreds of other attempts at entertainment that somehow get green-lit each year. I am very pleased (and surprised) to say that She’s Out of My League is one of these exceptions. Continue reading

Now that I’ve seen his new movie Cop Out, I’m starting to wonder whether the whole airline thing was a stunt to take the public’s attention away from the film.
I have pretty much always been a fan of Kevin Smith’s work. With few exceptions, I think the man is a comic genius. Unfortunately for Smith, however, with Cop Out, the only thing he succeeded in doing was making a movie that’s worse than Jersey Girl. Continue reading

Entertainment Weekly reports: With all the attention drawn to Nicolas Chartier’s email to friends asking them to vote for his war movie The Hurt Locker over the “$500 million film,” it’s little wonder that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has denied the producer entry to the show. The Academy ruled late last night that Chartier’s email violated the Academy’s strict campaigning rules. As a result, he will not be allowed admittance to the show this Sunday. Continue reading

“Shutter Island” Review by Krycek

02/21/2010, filed under Movies, Reviews.
When a movie’s release date gets pushed back, it’s generally bad news. So, when the highly anticipated thriller Shutter Island was pushed back, it raised the eyebrows of many moviegoers around the country. However, when it was announced that the delay was not because of reshoots or emergency editing, it was pretty clear that the reasons had nothing to do with the quality of the film. Well, after a long delay, the latest collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio has hit theaters, and I must say, it’s one of the strongest films to open in quite some time. There are certain roles that are destined to be played by certain actors. Everyone lucked out when Johnny Depp was given the role of Capt. Along with a supurb performance by Bridges, Crazy Heart is quite the interesting character study with great musical sequences and is a very well made film. Continue reading

“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” Review by Carlsberg

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief opened this past weekend against some tough competition from The Wolfman and the star-studded chick-flick Valentine’s Day. Although it lost at the Valentine’s Day weekend box office to Valentine’s Day (big surprise), Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief did accomplish something besides just having the longest title of any movie released so far this year. It was also a pretty decent movie. Continue reading

“Valentine’s Day” Review by Strider

02/17/2010, filed under Movies, Reviews.
American media has a long history of taking works from other countries and putting a spin on it for American audiences. This is how we got The Ring as based of the Japanese film Ringu and State of Play based off the British mini-series of the same name and, to a radically lesser degree, The Grudge based off a Japanese film called Ju-on: The Grudge which, to my understanding, is actually a sequel to a movie simply titled Ju-On. So I can see the pitch meeting in my mind that lead to Valentine’s Day. Writer Katherine Fugate sat before executives, possibly sans Gary Marshall, and said, “Do you remember that movie, Love Actually? Yes? Let’s do that.” Continue reading

“The Wolfman” Review by Puddy

Tags: ,
At first glance, The Wolfman appears to have everything a psychological thriller could want. Great actors (Benicio Del Torro, Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving and Emily Blunt), a great score (Danny Elfman), and the compelling story of werewolves, unfortunately director Joe Johnston is unable to bring all these elements together and this film misses the mark. Novels by author Nicholas Sparks always seem to do very well when adapted by Hollywood for the big screen. Sparks’ romantic tear-jerkers such as A Walk to Remember, Message In a Bottle, and The Notebook, to name a few, always bring in the theater crowds. Dear John is the latest of Sparks’ novels to be adapted and was released this past weekend and it looks as if it will be the first film to knock the box office powerhouse Avatar out of its top spot. “From Paris with Love” Review by Krycek

02/06/2010, filed under Movies, Reviews.
There are certain movies that you go into with prior expectations. If you think you’re going into a future classic and it’s less than ideal then, chances are, you’re going to leave disappointed. However, if you think a movie’s going to be crap, and you end up having a good time, then I would call it a success. Well, with the recent release of From Paris with Love, while I was initially excited about this flick, tons of bad press and negative reviews had me expecting a total waste of time. This being said, I have to report, while this movie certainly isn’t perfect, I can’t imagine someone watching this and not having a good time. Continue reading

“Legion” Review by Carlsberg

01/27/2010, filed under Movies, Reviews.
I was pretty excited going into Legion. I had seen the previews, which looked pretty cool. I really like Paul Bettany, and this seemed like something he had never done before. I was a little apprehensive about the date on which the movie was being released, because movies that get releases in the second part of January and into February tend to not be very good since studios tend to dump the films they have no faith in into this time period right after award season deadlines. So was it good?… Continue reading

There are certain stories that are destined to be translated into feature films. “The Book of Eli” Review by Krycek

There are certain actors and directors who just seem to be destined to work together. For example, when Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg first joined up, the result was the awesome Minority Report. Much like that film, it seemed fitting that Albert and Allen Hughes (Menace II Society, From Hell) would team up with Oscar winner Denzel Washington (Training Day). Well, their collaboration has given audiences The Book of Eli and, unfortunately for us, it takes itself far too seriously and is just too cliché-ridden to join the likes of other famous collaborations. “Daybreakers” Review by Carlsberg

01/12/2010, filed under Movies, Reviews.
Now that the entertainment industry has entered what I like to call “the Age of the Vampires,” Vampire-based stories are becoming one of the most popular genres of film and TV, with Twilight ruling the box office and True Blood ruling the television world. True Blood is an example of a “good” vampire story, that actually follows the “rules of vampires.” It contains a lot of blood, sex, and violence, which are not elements I require for a good story in general, but they are quite necessary in vampire stories. Since the world has become inexplicably enamored with this Twilight nonsense, which is nothing more than sappy, over-dramatic high school romance, with characters that merely sparkle in the sun rather than burn in it, I think people are beginning to forget how a vampire movie should be. Daybreakers is a refreshing step back into the right direction. Continue reading

Cult director Terry Gilliam is no stranger to any and everything going wrong on his films. For instance, Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote was wrought with so many problems, it had to be totally abandoned after a short period of filming. However, when Heath Ledger’s tragic death shocked fans everywhere, another Gilliam project was nearly lost, as Ledger was in the middle of filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Well, after a lot of creative brainstorming, The Imaginarium is beginning to hit theaters everywhere, and the final result is one of the most original and amazing films to be released all year.

“Youth in Revolt” Review by Carlsberg

01/09/2010, filed under Movies, Reviews.
I’ve been a fan of Michael Cera ever since Arrested Development. I think he has a very witty comic style and great comic timing. That being said, my biggest problem with him as of late is this: Michael Cera always plays “Michael Cera”. From Arrested Development to Superbad to Juno, he is always the same character. Usually a very funny character, but the same character nonetheless. When I saw the trailer for Youth in Revolt, I was hopeful that we may finally get to see him play a different character. Was I right? Well, yes and no. Continue reading

“Nine” Review by Carlsberg

12/30/2009, filed under Movies, Reviews.
It’s not very often that a film will come along whose plot and story are mediocre at best, but the lackluster of the film is completely overwhelmed by the outstanding performances of its cast, making it not only a watchable, but even an enjoyable film. Director Rob Marshall’s new musical Nine is this type of film. Nine is about a once-great Italian filmmaker named Guido Contini who is struggling in both his professional life as well as his personal life. While trying to find inspiration for his latest (and Ninth) film, Contini also finds trouble juggling all the women in his life. Continue reading

I just got the opportunity to see New Moon, the second installment of the Twilight Saga. Having experienced the Twilight frenzy over the past couple of years, I now have to ask myself the question, “Has the whole world gone crazy, or is it just me?” My only positive comment about this over-indulgent, sappy, waste of time, was that it wasn’t QUITE as bad as the first movie, but that’s not saying much. Then the next day at lunch you make yourself a sandwich and notice that can of coke from the night before. “Capitalism: A Love Story” Review by Carlsberg

I want to preface this review by saying that I don’t really like Michael Moore. Politics aside, I think he is a loud mouth that tries to force his opinions on people, whether they want to hear them or not, and at inopportune times like during an Oscar acceptance speech when you should be thanking the people that helped you succeed and then heading backstage before the music starts again. That being said, when I do wish to hear his opinions, like when I go to the theater to see one of his films, I have to admit that Moore is a damn fine documentary filmmaker. Continue reading

“Paranormal Activity” Review by Krycek

October 16, 2009, filed under Movies, Reviews.
These days, horror movies seem to be a dime a dozen. Especially since we’ve breached October, there seems to be a new attempt to scare the hell out of a different audience every week. However, for the most part, recently made horror movies tend to leave out the goal of actually scaring anyone. Typically, when you throw down your hard-earned cash to get a ticket for one of these movies, you’re either going to get a comedy with some kills (The Final Destination franchise) or plot less torture-porn (The Saw franchise). Also, ever since The Ring came out, studios seem scared to death to open an R-rated horror movie in theaters. Well, this week, horror fans are in for a treat, because an extremely small movie is hitting theaters everywhere that is one of the scariest and most disturbing things to hit movie theaters in quite a few years, and it’s name is Paranormal Activity. N.O.F.F. — “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” Review by Krycek

October 15, 2009, filed under Movies, Reviews.
Back in 1992, screen legend Harvey Keitel gave one of his most memorable performances in the groundbreaking police drama, Bad Lieutenant. The film’s graphic sex, violence, and language were enough to earn it a NC-17 rating, and worldwide acclaim. With a subject matter so dark and graphic, it seemed like an odd film to earn a remake. However, legendary director Werner Herzog (Rescue Dawn) took the challenge of reimagining this story, and the result is the wonderful Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Continue reading

“Whip It” Review by Krycek

October 4, 2009, filed under Movies, Reviews.
When actors decide to branch out behind the camera and take a stab at directing you really never know what to expect. Sure, Mel Gilbson proved great with his Braveheart, and George Clooney gave us the awesome Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and you can’t deny that Clint Eastwood is one of the great directors with his number of fantastic films. However, you also have to remember Kevin Costner’s disaster The Postman and the fact that William Shatner nearly killed the Star Trek Franchise with his Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. So when former child actor Drew Barrymore decided to jump in the director’s chair, a lot of people were left curious of the outcome. Not to worry folks, even though her roller derby movie Whip It is extremely formulaic, it has enough charm, charisma, and fun to overcome it’s by the book script and be one of the more entertaining movies to come out this fall. Continue reading

Top Ten Horror/Comedies by Krycek

It isn’t unusual for certain filmmakers to blend genres. Without this we wouldn’t have romantic comedies, sci-fi thrillers, or dramedies. One of the most poplar hybrids of cinema, especially with cult moviegoers, is the horror/comedy. This week, the list of the great horror/comedies has grown by one with the release of the fantastic Zombieland. With this in mind, I’ve put together a list of my top ten horror/comedies of all time. The Awesome Zombie: “5 Entertaining Ways To Prepare For The Zombie Apocalypse” by Flash

October 3, 2009, filed under Comics, DVD, Games, Movies.
Do you love zombies? Stop. It was a rhetorical question, of course you love zombies, the adorable little scamps. They get a bad rap because of the whole “undead abomination furiously eating the flesh of the living” thing, but I can’t fault them for that, I mean, they gotta eat something right? And let’s get one thing straight, right off the bat: the zombie apocalypse WILL happen, I couldn’t tell you when or how, but keep an eye on the old lady living across the street, I’ve seen her shambling around the neighborhood eying the playing children like they were a $40 filet minion and moaning all the while. It could just be the Alzheimer’s but you better keep your distance to be safe. This weekend’s release of the new movie (or should I say instructional video) Zombieland starring the ever-flowing cup of awesome that is Woody Harrelson, is the latest media attempt to keep us informed and educated on how to care for (or mercilessly slaughter) our zombie brothers, but it isn’t the first of its kind and certainly won’t be the last. Here I present the 5 best ways to prepare for the zombie apocalypse. This list spans all popular media including movies, video games, and comics to best ensure that this important information gets out to those who need it. Continue reading

“Zombieland” Review by Carlsberg

October 1, 2009, filed under Movies, Reviews.
So, I had the pleasure of attending a two-week-early screening of Zombieland. The movie was excellent and everything I hoped it would be. Continue reading

“Pandorum” Review by Carlsberg

September 27, 2009, filed under Movies, Reviews.
Going into the theater to watch Pandorum, I didn’t really have high hopes. I had seen the trailers, and although I do like Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster, I thought the trailers made the movie look like a rip-off of Event Horizon, which is a sci-fi horror movie that I really like. But I gave Pandorum a fair shot, and I’m glad I did. Not only was it not at all like Event Horizon, I thought it was actually a pretty damn good sci-fi thriller. Continue reading

“Surrogates” Review by Krycek

September 26, 2009, filed under Movies, Reviews.
Science Fiction movies that deal with the near future can be very good. In the 80s, Blade Runner was a fantastic parallel to the bleak future feared by many. Later, we received films such as A.I., Minority Report, and I, Robot. Even Star Trek: First Contact showed a world in the not too distant future. All of these films were original and groundbreaking in there own unique ways. With the recent release of the new sci-fi thriller Surrogates, Hollywood shows us that borrowing ideas from far too many sources can overshadow even a novel concept. Continue reading

Whenever I bring up Seth Rogen I get a lot of people tell me how much they love him and a lot of people tell me they hate him. “Jennifer’s Body” Review by Krycek

So, back in 2007, a new voice emerged in screenwriting. With her academy award winning script for the indie-hit Juno, Diablo Cody went from being completely unknown to being on the top of everyone’s ‘it’ lists. After a brief venture into television (she created the Showtime series United States of Tara), everyone was wondering just what this unique and talented writer would go after next. Well, her highly anticipated follow up to Juno has finally arrived, in the form of a high school horror movie called Jennifer’s Body. While this movie is extremely entertaining, I have a feeling that the majority of the intended audience will walk away very unsatisfied. Continue reading

“Whiteout” Review by Krycek

September 11, 2009, filed under Movies, Reviews.
In certain movies, the setting is everything. Try and imagine Lawrence of Arabia in the jungle…wouldn’t work, eh? How about Romancing the Stone in downtown Los Angeles…not quite, I’d say. Or maybe Rambo in the suburbs…ok, that last one might be interesting, but you get the point. Where to place your story has a great impact on the feel of your film. Now, very few movies have ventured to the harsh climate of Antarctica, where the new thriller Whiteout is set. While Whiteout isn’t a complete cinematic disaster, it certainly isn’t very memorable considering its intriguing setting. Continue reading

Hollywood is a funny place. Every day, hundreds and hundreds of actors bust their chops to deliver quality entertainment to the masses, and a very select few actually succeed. Aug 28, 2009 Much like any genre, horror movies contain both good and not-so-good projects. When it comes to franchises, more often than not, the longer they go on, the worse they become. DVD Watch — “The Last House on the Left ‘09″

In 1972, a promising young filmmaker by the name of Wes Craven shocked audiences all over the world with his debut film called The Last House on the Left. The film was so violent and disturbing, it was banned in countries all over the globe. In fact, it wasn’t until 2004, that the film could finally be seen in Australia. Craven’s original vision of mixing Vietnam-like torture scenes with slapstick comedy and brutality made The Last House on the Left a true pioneer in horror films. As effective as the 1972 version of the film is, it’s dated material and shoestring budget made it ripe for a remake. The 2009 version of The Last House on the Left recaptures the intensity and brutality of the 1972 version in a way that I didn’t think was possible in today’s movie climate. Continue reading

“District 9″ Review by Krycek

August 15, 2009, filed under Movies, Reviews
When you’re dealing with science fiction, there are a number of different types of films you can expect. There are the ones with lots of fun action, explosions, and special effects. These are the movies that generate a lot of money, such as Transformers, Independence Day, and Starship Troopers. Then, on the other side, we sometimes get films with more emphasis on science than fiction. These tend to be more cerebral, thinking-person movies, such as Blade Runner, Solaris, and this year’s Moon. However, every now and again, talented filmmakers can successfully combine the two elements to create a unique sci-fi vision that equally entertains while exercising the mind. Examples of these rare hybrids that work are I, Robot, The Matrix, and the new film District 9. Continue reading

You stop and wonder why the “sci fi” channel is now called the”syfy” channel. Suddenly, you stop (probably on TNT, TBS or FX) and you start watching the movie you’ve been looking for. It may not be a good movie. But for some reason you happen to start watching and you can’t stop. I like to call these “Stop the Clicker Movies” and here are my fab 5. Continue reading

“G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” Review by Krycek

The 1980s were a great time to be a kid. There were cool toys, and awesome cartoons to occupy us every day after school and Saturday morning. With the success of Transformers in 2007, Hollywood discovered that not only will these stories reach out to today’s children, but adults who grew up watching these characters and playing with the toys will come out in droves to recapture these childhood memories. Earlier this summer, we got the god-awful sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which may be one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. We also got glimpses of a downright terrible trailer for the next big screen adaptation of the popular 1980s cartoon and toy line of G.I. Joe. Now all the marketing for this film was pure crap. However, being a child of the 80s, I must say that G.I. Joe was one of my favorites, I liked Joe more than Transformers, and I had all the toys, loved the cartoon, and stopped to watch all of those awesome PSA’s. So, with much doubt I walked into G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra expecting a flaming bucket of shit. However, while this movie isn’t going to be winning any awards, I must say it accomplished 2 important goals: it fully captured the spirit of the 1980s cartoon and it’s one of the more entertaining movies of the summer. “(500) Days of Summer” Review by Carlsberg

August 6, 2009, filed under Movies, Reviews
(500) Days of Summer is the story of the 500-day-long, unconventional romance between Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel). While Tom is the inconspicuous romantic-at-heart, Summer is the quirky Ringo Starr fan, who doesn’t believe in the concept of love, and whom everyone, especially Tom, is unexplainably drawn to. Now this seems like the beginning of a love story that we have seen time and again, but I assure you, it’s not. The way this story is told is through a series of flashbacks and memories. The film begins with Tom in present day, nearly inconsolable, as Summer has just unexpectedly ended their relationship and he desperately wants to get her back. Continue reading

Awesome Special Features: “The Mist” Black & White Cut

August 5, 2009, filed under DVD

One of the coolest, craziest and scariest horror movies to come out in recent years is director Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist. Darabont has had previous success adapting King books with The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, but with The Mist he tackles one of King’s horror stories, and created a very effective fright-fest with one of the creepiest ending’s I’ve ever seen. However, for a completely alternate take on this movie, Darabont has included a black & white cut of the film on the collector’s edition DVD and Blu-Ray of the film. What you would think to be such a simple edit completely changes the viewing experience of the film. The movie is transformed into a classic 1950’s monster movie. Darabont does amazing things with shadows and lighting that are vastly showcased in the black & white cut. Continue reading

But the answer is: Those films were just boring. Continue reading
