The Village Comics Rack: DC Comics Present “Earth One”

DC Comics have announced today via their Source Blog that, starting in 2010, they will begin publishing new adventures of Superman and Batman under the Earth One banner in an exclisive Graphic Novel format. This will be the first time that the tales of the World’s Finest will be presented in such a way and DC is taking the opportunity to mix things up. Superman is coming to us from fan-favorite writer, J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) and on-the-rise penciler Shane Davis (Superman / Batman) and the creative team in charge of Batman will be Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, the team currently responsible for updating Superman’s DC Universe origin in Superman: Secret Origin. The Village Comics Rack: Flash’s Review Roundup for the Week of 11/04/09

Welcome back True Believers! I’m coming back to you with my reviews for last week’s comic book releases. Last week was a much lighter load than my first week’s metric ton of periodicals, but I still have a swell bunch of comic-booky goodness to pass your way; mostly great stuff but there is a stinker or two mixed in the bunch. We have a couple of new series popping up this week in addition to our regular purchases and any week when I can buy an issue of my current favorite ongoing series is a good one so let me start off with that book. The Village Comics Rack: Flash’s Review Roundup for 10/28/09

In the immortal words of the late, great Dr. Nick Riviera, “Hi, everybody”!!! Welcome to my first round of comic book reviews. I’ve been buying up comics since I first learned to read with books like Transformers and G.I. Joe that I would buy at the Circle K down the street. These days I read all kinds of comics from super-heroes, to crime noir, to dramatic non-fiction so hopefully I can help you find the right comic to spend your hard earned, recession laced cash on. Comics Catch-Up – A Comprehensive Guide to The Blackest Night (Part 1) by Flash

The Blackest Night is DC Comics latest company-wide event or crossover and it’s a damn fine piece of storytelling featuring super-powered zombies (and we all know how much I love zombies), but – as is the case with most comic book stories – it may throw off the casual fan with heavy doses of comics’ continuity and history. The books stand up fine all by their lonesome but you get a much deeper appreciation for the material being presented and a much better understanding for what exactly is going on if you have the back-story to go with it. It’s like watching the upcoming sixth season of LOST without having ever watched a prior episode – sure, you’re still watching what is probably the best show on television, but chances are you’re going to be pretty lost yourself a lot of the time. Lucky you, I’m here to free you of the burden of having to read hundreds of issues of comics. I’ll be running down the major points (with a ton of bonus nuances sprinkled about) that you will need to really get the most out of The Blackest Night. This is going to be a long one so I split it, you’ll find part 2 posted tomorrow so go get a sammich and a Coke and enjoy. Continue reading

The Awesome Zombie: “5 Entertaining Ways To Prepare For The Zombie Apocalypse” by Flash

Do you love zombies? Stop. It was a rhetorical question, of course you love zombies, the adorable little scamps. They get a bad rap because of the whole “undead abomination furiously eating the flesh of the living” thing, but I can’t fault them for that, I mean, they gotta eat something right? And let’s get one thing straight, right off the bat: the zombie apocalypse WILL happen, I couldn’t tell you when or how, but keep an eye on the old lady living across the street, I’ve seen her shambling around the neighborhood eying the playing children like they were a $40 filet minion and moaning all the while. It could just be the Alzheimer’s but you better keep your distance to be safe. This weekend’s release of the new movie (or should I say instructional video) Zombieland starring the ever-flowing cup of awesome that is Woody Harrelson, is the latest media attempt to keep us informed and educated on how to care for (or mercilessly slaughter) our zombie brothers, but it isn’t the first of its kind and certainly won’t be the last. Here I present the 5 best ways to prepare for the zombie apocalypse. This list spans all popular media including movies, video games, and comics to best ensure that this important information gets out to those who need it. Continue reading

The Village Arcade — Flash’s Top 5 Most Anticipated Games for XBOX 360 and Playstation 3

OK, here’s my dilemma; I beat the leader, credits roll, I probably get a PSN Trophy or XBOX LIVE Accomplishment for completing the game, and maybe even get a little bonus item for the next play-through; what do i do next?  I could go for another play-through, but considering I just beat this game that probably means I’ve been playing it nearly non-stop for the last several weeks or months… Continue reading

The Village Arcade – Which Should YOU Buy? The Playstation 3 or XBOX 360?

You may not realize this, but a new momentous chapter in history began this past weekend. Sony’s Playstation 3, a system plenty of people were interested in but nobody wanted to buy has been transformed into a slimmer and cheaper version of it’s previously obese self. The new PS3 Slim was released at a cheaper and more competitively priced $299.00. That’s cool and all but that’s not the reality altering event to which I was refferring. See, it was also announced this past weekend that Microsoft’s XBOX 360 Elite, the mecca of XBOX 360′s with it’s larger hardrive oh so enviable black finish will also see a price drop in the near future. It’s new price? Why that’ll be $299.00. So for the first time in this console generation both of the “hardcore” gaming systems out there will be selling for the same, reasonably low price. The Village Arcade – “IPhone Video Game Roundup” by Flash

When the IPhone was first released it really wasn’t anything more than an IPod with a phone tacked on. Sure you could surf the internet with Safari, but cell phones were connecting before Apple came along. The Apple App Store came along and changed all that. It offered a seemingly never-ending supply of digital toys, social networking apps, and most importantly games; lots and lots of games and game knock-offs. To be perfectly honest, the majority of video games in the App Store are either derivative, crap, or both. However, there are some real gems buried under all that excrement. Continue reading

“Amazing Spider-Man #603″ Comic Review by Flash

To the average Spider-Man fan who knows the character from the movies and classic cartoons know that Peter Parker is one unlucky dude. His uncle was shot by a robber he failed to apprehend earlier in the day, his personal relationships are a mess because of his double-life as Spider-Man, and he’s always broke. If you’re a fan of the comic book Spider-Man then you know that recently he’s had it much worse. Continue reading

The Village Arcade – “inFamous” by Flash

I’ve noticed an interesting trend in the superhero video game genre; superhero games based around new IP’s are far superior to licensed superhero games. Sure, there are some pretty good games out there that let you live out your comic book fantasies like Spider-Man 2 or even the recent X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but games like Crackdown and Prototype; games based on brand new superhero type characters, blow them out of the water. inFamous is a shining example of that trend.
